Description: From January 1888 onwards, as both editor and publisher Albert Steck (1843-1899) published the newspaper Der Schweizerische Sozialdemokrat once a week. In 1888 he was one of the co-founders of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. In its first issue of 7 January 1888, the newspaper stated its aim: "We want to turn the hundreds of thousands of Swiss fellow citizens who, according to the current institutions and laws of the fatherland, must lead a depressed, stunted and dreary existence all their lives, into free, happy and thus also noble people." The paper ceased publication at the end of 1892. Its successor, the Berner Tagwacht, was published from 1893 onwards and was supported by the Bernese Social Democrats.
