Description: This newspaper was founded on 5.1.1856 as a journal of political struggle from the former Catholic Conservatives under the title Volksblatt zunächst für Sargans, Gaster und Seebezirk. This regional newspaper soon achieved cantonal importance and in 1860 took the name St. Gallisches Volksblatt then St. Galler Volksblatt in 1862. This title was retained even though in the 1880s the newspaper lost its cantonal importance and became a regional newspaper once again. The newspaper was published once a week initially then twice weekly from 20.6.1882 and from 3.1.1910 three times a week. The newspaper ceased publication in 26.5.1993 fter being taken over by the Linth Zeitung. The years from 1856 to 1863 present some gaps as the original collection is no longer complete. The years from 1856 to 1900 are available in the online version.
