Description: The Berner Wochenblatt is the continuation of the first gazette of the city of Bern, the Avis-Blättlein, founded in the early 1730s by Samuel Fueter and Sigmund Wagner. Following the privileges granted by the Bernese government, the newspaper appeared from 1737 under the title Hoch-Obrigkeitlich Privilegiertes Avis-Blättlein, from 1756 as Hoch-Obrigkeitlich Privilegiertes-Avisblatt and from 1780 as Hoch-Obrigkeitlich Privilegiertes-Wochenblatt. The content of the weekly newspaper focused on news of various events in Switzerland and the city of Bern, official notices from Bern's city hall and various columns on things to buy, as well as wanted and found things. After the fall of Old Bern due to the invasion of French troops in 1798, the newspaper appeared under the title Berner Wochenblatt and developed into Bern's official publication body. Historically significant political upheavals in connection with the Helvetic period, the later fall of Napoleon and the Restoration period were not addressed, which meant that the Berner Wochenblatt was also not affected by the newspaper censorship that prevailed at the time. Although it was a government newspaper, the paper survived the abdication of the patrician regiment in 1831 and was published until 1833, when it was succeeded by Der Bernische Anzeiger.
