Description: The Wochenblatt für die vier löblichen Kantone Ury, Schwytz, Unterwalden und Zug (weekly newspaper for the four praiseworthy cantons Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Zug) was first published on 12 November 1814 and appeared weekly. The publisher was the printer Beat Blunschi Josef (1782-1850) from Zug. The newspaper was published under the title Neue Zuger-Zeitung (I) in 1822, as Zuger-Zeitung from 1823 to 1831, and as Der freie Schweizer from 1832 to 1849. Although initially unpolitical, the newspaper became a journal of liberal opinion towards the end of the 1820s. At the end of 1849, Der freie Schweizer – the last continuation of the earliest printed newspaper in Zug - succumbed to the strong intra-party competition from the newspaper Zugerisches Kantons-Blatt, which started publication at the beginning of that same year. This online version contains the publications from 1814 to 1849.
