Description: The Nidwaldner Volksblatt was founded in 1866 by Caspar von Matt (1817-1884). Initially four pages a week, it contained in-depth articles on political topics, obituaries, reports on the international situation and columns on the Swiss Confederation and Nidwalden. In the early years the paper was characterized by its Catholic-conservative background. In 1923 the publishing rights were transferred to the newly founded "Gesellschaft Nidwaldner Volksblatt". From December 1923 the newspaper appeared twice a week, from 1981 three times a week. The reporting became increasingly neutral. From issue no. 120/15 Oct. 1985, the Nidwaldner Volksblatt appeared as the lead paper of the Lucerne daily Vaterland, 6 times a week. In 1991 the Nidwaldner Volksblatt and Nidwaldner Tagblatt merged to form the Nidwaldner Zeitung. The digital copies are incomplete from October 1985 to 1991 and often contain only the first two pages and the Nidwaldner part.
