Description: The Grütlianer was the organ of the Société suisse du Grütli (Swiss Grütli Society) and was first published in 1851. Its publication frequency varied from one to two times a week initially to once every two weeks. Between 1891 and 1906 it was published three times a week and eventually from 1906 on became a daily. Politically, the newspaper positioned itself alongside the Grütli Society, which supported patriotic ideals and was close the workers’ movement. The Society founded a number of health insurance companies and unions. Even following its merger with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1901, the Society remained an autonomous organization. It left the SDP in 1916, resulting in the number of members falling by half and leading to the break-up of the Society in 1925. The Grütlianer ceased publication at the same time.
